Is it true that bio-engineered foods don't reproduce?

  • I was at the farmer's market and this guy said that if I buy a bio-engineered potato then it wont sprout eyes (the little new roots on the skin) like a regular potato does. ...show more

  • Answer:

Agribusiness is always looking for new ways to produce revenue. I have scanned articles in business mags that said Monsanto has perfected some varieties of veges that will not reproduce fertile seeds. In the past a farmer would save a percentage of his corn for re seeding next year. Now some crops are lifeless and can not be used for seed, which means more business for Monsanto. Keep sending the kids for MBAs so they can continue to outsmart the consumers.

How would they grow more of these potatoes then if they don't reproduce (potatoes are hardly ever grown from seed), unless they grow them from cuttings from the leaves? Maybe they are treated with some sort of chemical to inhibit sprouting and almost certainly there is some sort of patent on them to stop you legally growing them. I hope you bought one and are going to test it out?

sounds like Monsanto terminator seeds

They do reproduce. To not reproduce, they need to have specific genes modified. That potato was probably modified so that it doesn't reproduce, but not all bio-engineered foods are like that.
