For Sprinting, it is nearly as important as leg muscles. Your shoulders and chest are what control your arms pumping, so I would suggest push-ups!!!

well if your a sprinter, having upper body strength helps ALOT. but even if your a distance runner, upper body does improve times because your arms will get less fatigued and can help pump your body faster at the end of the race. As for core, yes this does help. If you have a weak core, you could be prone to back injuries or bad posture while running. All strength comes from your core so working it will help A LOT.
