What times do ivy league schools look for in high school juniors for the 1600m and 800m?

  • Im a Junior in High School right now and I am an avid runner. I am currently on my cross country team, and my 5k is 17 48. I last year ran a 4 48 mile and a 4 46 1600 m run. I also ...show more

Like the others are saying, Ivy league schools traditionally have very strong cross country and/or track programs. Columbia, for instance, recruits only top flight runners. Typically you'll need to be well under 2 in the 800 and 4:25 in the 1600. They might let you walk on with slower times, but you won't be guaranteed a spot. Honestly, your 5k time is extremely slow for most colleges and will get no attention whatsoever. Your 2:04 800 isn't that bad but is nothing compared to what almost all D1 colleges are looking for. Dropping 4 seconds from your 800 will be tough, but is possible given the right training and ideal racing conditions (good comp, nice weather, etc.) A 4:46 1600 is actually much worse than the 2:04 with regard to recruitment. Also, your goal in the 1600 seems a bit unrealistic. 16 seconds in the 1600 is a major time drop, so unless you haven't been serious about track for the past few years or haven't been running many miles, I doubt you'll see such dramatic improvement. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but your outlook for collegiate running, barring a total transformation, is rather bleak.

Ivy league collages usually have 5k runners that do it in 15mins dead. But as far as I know the ivy league colleges don't offer sports scholarships - at least Harvard doesn't anyway.

If you could run a sub 4:30 1600m and a sub 2:00 800m you will have a lot of schools interested in you. Those types of times would most likely be good enough to qualify to run in most states high school championships. You'll have to increase your training with a careful week by week plan that starts now. You'll need to increase your mileage, temp work, speed work and interval sessions with proper rest and diet to avoid injury. The times you are looking to achieve are close to the limit of most of us mere mortals. The faster you get the harder it is to get faster,

Junior year shouldn't matter much. Its about what your running when you graduate. What if you train hard and run like a 4:15 mile senior year. Its possible. Its not about what you were its about what you are and what you will do for them. Keep training as hard as you can. Ivys want kids running under 4:20. But whos to say you can't do that?
