  • Answer:

You are bidding against someone else who has placed a Max Bid that is higher than what you have bid. The way it works is that you have bid $1.05, which probably increased the minimum higher bid to 25 cents. Someone came in and placed a max bid of say $2.00 (this is hidden btw, so it could be higher or lower). The system compared the bid to yours and automatically bid $1.30 (your $1.05 plus the quarter). You came back and re-bid $1.55 (another 25 cents). The system then looked at the max bids against the item, found the other person's bid at say the $2.00, compared it to your bid and found it was higher so it then compared the amount to the necessary bid (your $1.55 plus 25 cents = $1.80), found the max bid was higher than the necessary bid and made the automatic bid. This will happen until the max bid no longer is higher than your bid or equal to or higher than the next necessary bid.
