  • Answer:

What I know of it, the ashes can be mixed with the ink, and the tattoo applied. During the healing process, the body will reject the ashes, as it is a foreign substance. However, the ink will stay in the skin and the tattoo will appear as it should. I guess the honest answer would be, no one really knows how the body rejects the ashes, but, if she wants it done as a memorial, I would entertain her and do it. If it were me, I would mix the ashes very lightly, and apply them in the shading. I wouldn't take the risk of mixing it with the other colors, as you never know what will happen.

Due to the body's tendency to reject impurities introduced into the system, tattoo ink mixed with cremation ashes may be rejected as being an impurity. At the very least, this could leave you with an unflattering tattoo that may or may not be fixable. Worst case scenario, the ashes could cause an infection that may or may not make you very ill or cause infection or scarring in the tattooed area. It is possible, and it is a semi-common procedure.

We've had the request a few times. You just put a small pinch of the ashes in a number sixteen cup, and add your black ink. Not much to it, really. Makes you feel a little weird, and that's about it. They're happy.
