  Hi, yes you can use the New Google planner for keyword research, it's limited now on what it returns, since this was put up 7 years ago, a lot has happened since then, so many new tools have come out, just recently in 2013 Dec, a new tool came out called Keyword Demon and it is really powerful and brings back heaps of data, and all you have to do it load your keywords in it from Google KW planner, and hit start and it goes off and does all this data research for you, even tells you the commercial viability.
