I visited Yogyakarta a couple of years ago. Lots of reasonable hotel, if you don't want to stay the night in expensive place. Just ask the hotel people to find a guide for you. They will be happy to help. Borobudur is actually included in Central Java province. I went there by AC bus, but I forget the name. Borobudur is a Buddhist temple, the BIGGEST one in the world. I think Angkor Wat is not that big. When you arrive at the temple complex, there will be lots of street-sellers haunting you. Just smile and move on. If you want to buy the souvenirs they offer, make sure you bargain half price :) Prepare yourself to climb up until you reach the stupa. Bring bottles of mineral waters, you will get thirsty. Prambanan is also in Central Java. From Yogya, Borobudur is to the left and Prambanan is to the right. Prambanan is a Hindu temple. The temple complex is smaller. Some parts of the temple are reconstructed, specially after 2006 earthquake. In Yogya, don't forget to visit Malioboro. The famous street mall. You will mostly find batik and silver craft, Yogya's best souvenir items. Again: bargain, bargain, and bargain :) You also could visit the Sultan's Palace. As you probably know, we also have royals, and Yogya Sultanate is considered the biggest existing local monarchy in Indonesia. These are the big travel agents that you can use, if you want: Vayatour, Panen Tour, Smailing Tour. Thank you for visiting Indonesia :)

I was there with my local friend in 2005 and 2006. We drove right around Java which was very convenient. But surely you can meet someone who will guide you around. Catch a flight to Yogyakarta (be wary of Indonesian Domestic Airlines, not the safest in the world. Get the expensive flights to improve your chances) Stay at a western hotel, book a guided tour. The usual touristy stuff...Otherwise just do a search on the net. Yogyakarta (pronounced Jogjakarta- but the Dutch pronounce J as a Y and it stuck ever since), located in central Java; was the capital of Java when it was it's own monarchy. It is very cultural and high brow. The surrounding land is very beautiful and dotted with hills. Borobudur was built in the middle of these hills as it was seen as a protected/enchanted area by the Buddhist rulers. It is about 40Kms or 25miles out of Yogyakarta. Very hot. The black stones absorb lots of heat. Carry water and wear a hat. Buy something, anything from the souvenir stands and help the local economy. Prambanan is similar to Borobudur but Hindu, not really near Borobudur I think it is about 15miles out of Yogyakarta but in a different direction. I didn't go to it. My philosophy is you've seen one temple/church/mosque you've seen it all. But Borobudur is the second largest Hindu/Buddhist temple after Angkor Wat in Cambodia, so definitely worth the visit. My suggestion is to give yourself a day or two extra when in Java. Don't be on a tight schedule in a country like Indonesia. Too many hurdles and unexpected events, airport delays, weather, earthquakes etc. Indonesians have a care free attitude to time and schedules and it can get very frustrating. Having said that, I personally love a challenge. My favourite site in Indonesia was hands down, the summit at Mount Bromo and Semeru in East Java viewed at sunrise. Truly memorable. Java is one big volcano chain, so never far from a summit...

I visited Borobudur years ago, and it is well worth the trip. It is not touristy and out in the country. I believe I stayed in Jogjakarta, the cultural capitol of Indonesia and took a taxi or bus to the shrine. It is not far and not expensive. Besides Borobudur, the city of Jogjakarta is by far more interesting and charming and "Indonesian" than Jakarta, and the people were much friendlier. I am not familiar with Prambanan. Bali is wonderful. I saw the countryside during my train ride from Jakarta to Jogjakarta, which is not expensive. Good luck and enjoy. By the way, if you're a male, do not wear shorts in Indonesia. It is considered very rude for a grown man to show his bare legs.
