How do you swallow liquid capsules?

When taking capsules, is it okay to just open them up and swallow the stuff inside?

I'v been prescribed a medicine for period pain. However, i have a phobia of swallowing capsules, tablets etc. The lady at the pharmacy said I can just crush them and take them. ...show more

Usually if a medicine comes in a capsule, it's designed to be released over a period of time. If you open the capsule and just take the powder, you will get the whole dose at one time. This probably wouldn't hurt with a medicine for menstrual pain, but you might not get relief for as long a time as you would have if it was time released. But you should still wait the recommended time before taking more, or you could potentially cause an overdose.

It depends on the drug. For this drug, it appears to be okay. Effectiveness can be reduced for certain medications. I recommend that you should take the capsule. It is less risky.

Capsules are only gelatin covers,if you hold it in your mouth with a warm drink it will soften so it can be swallowed really easy. I sure prefer them to some of the drier ones. Remember that makes them easier to carry as well
