Homeschooled: How do I go about getting a diploma and not a GED.?

  • I’m home-schooled and I was wondering how can I get a diploma. I emailed the counselor at the local high school and this is what they said. Home schooled students can take the ...show more

Easy. Your parents issue you one. As a homeschooler, your parents are considered your school administration, which means that they can legally issue a completely legitimate diploma. They issue it and sign it, and there you go. But honestly, no one is ever going to ask to see it...they're going to ask for your transcript or verification that you graduated. I graduated close to 20 years ago, and not once has a university or employer asked to see my diploma. (I have a college education and have held several positions that required professional licensing and background checks.) You do not have to take the GED, and you do not have to go through an umbrella school...you simply have to satisfy the graduation requirements that your school administrators (i.e., your parents) have set for you - same as any other student. Hope that helps! Edit - i_come_from - congrats on the acceptance!

Basically there are two ways to get your diploma after you've been homeschooled. Either your parents oversaw your education (even if they didn't teach you every subject) and they issue you a diploma (yes, that's the most common and legitimate options and accepted by colleges) OR you recieve a diploma through the online/correspondence school you've taken all of your courses from. All of the specifics are at this link for the Home School Legal Defense Association: http://www.hslda.org/highschool/faq.asp#D9

If you're in an online school (which would count as your umbrella school, in a sense), they should issue you a diploma. If not, then your parents issue it when you are finished with high school. If you plan to go to college, it wont matter that this diploma isn't accredited. All colleges want from home schoolers are SAT/ACT scores and transcripts, along with the normal application requirements (essays, interview, letters of reference, what ever they ask all their students for). Some more selective universities may want to see a description of the courses you took, a list of textbooks used, or a few work samples, and some may want you to take additional tests like the SAT II subject tests, but most don't ask for much. You will not need an accredited diploma to get into college as a home schooler. **EDIT** Just to add, I find it hilarious that Wounded Duck criticizes your ability to understand what you read, but he got that entire paragraph completely backwards as if he only read the first line of it. Sorry, Duck, but it seems public school (or where ever you went) failed you.

Sha_lyn is right -- if you're in an online program, THEY will be issuing your diploma. You need to go back to their website and check around, and also contact your online advisor about what you have left to do to complete the requirements and receive your diploma.

If you are enrolled with an online program, they will issue your diploma.Your online program is your umbrella. If you plan on going to college, you should take the SAT or ACT depending on what is required by the colleges you are applying to.

http://www.cveprogram.com - These guys do it. They verify your credits, then issue a diploma. Hope this helps!

Apparently homeschooling has failed you! That paragraph fully explains it. You cannot get a Diploma without attending a school. Homeschooled children can ONLY receive a GED!
