How can I get my parents to let me become homeschooled?

Firstly, how much research have you done? If I was you, I'd start by finding out about home-education where you live. I don't know what the rules are where you live but here education ceases to be compulsory after year 10, in which case you wouldn't need official permission to homeschool and your parents wouldn't have to be officially involved. If, in your jurisdiction, compulsory education goes beyond Year 10, you'll need to check out the local rules, requirements etc -- you could start by going to http://www.hslda.org and clicking on your state (assuming you're in America as you say 'grade 10'). You'd also need to research how you're going to homeschool: your proposed methodology etc. Just because you've chosen to 'homeschool' does *not* mean you have to do school (or anything resembling it!) at home, unless that is what you want to do. Being homeschooled also does *not* mean your parents have to take on the role of your teachers, unless that is what you and they want. My siblings and I are home-educated, have been all our lives and our parents don't teach us: mentor us, yes; teach us, no. They both run their own businesses, they don't have the time to teach nine different things to nine kids! If you're going into grade 11, you must be what? 16? Most home-educated 16 year olds either teach themselves or organise their own 'teachers' for themselves from within their family, friends, neighbours, local community etc. (Alternatively there are both private and public online schools that you could go with eg K12, Penn Foster etc. Strictly speaking, that isn't homeschooling as you'd be a private/public school student but they do offer another way for you to do your lessons at home) Secondly, have you even broached the subject with your parents yet? You need to talk to them, find out what their thoughts and feelings are...and then, if necessary, find the information/people (poss. from a local homeschooling group) that it's going to take to assuage them. Thirdly, see if you can find a copy of Grace Llewellyn's book: 'The Teenage Liberation Handbook: How to quit school and get a real-life and education'.

Since parents are the "teachers" in a home school situation, it would seem that they must be agreeable and even enthused about the idea before it will work. Also, each state has its own laws regulating home schools. You might start by researching what the requirements are in your state. Then decide what kind of curriculum you would use. Gather as much information as you can and then talk to your parents about it. Since homeschooling will take up a lot of your parents' time, you might also suggest ways you will help out around the house to make up for the time they spend in education.

Home schooling doesn't work for everyone. It can cost a fair bit too. I think you should do some research on it and find courses/curriculum you'd like to do. Tell your parents how you feel and act like an adult when talking about it. Your parents should listen and it'll go better if you know what you're talking about.

Try k12.com. They offer free homeschooling online. You could find tons of information there. good luck! =)

Homeschooling doesn't work for most people. Your parents would have a huge responsibility to find the right materials and work with you so that you got the education you need. Why not look into transferring schools or a private school? Don't set your education back.
