I just moved to a new state, and the public school is not acceptable so I'm probably going to be home schooled. Being in a new state and not knowing anyone, I feel like I'm ...show more

Answer:
We are moving to a new state soon too. My son is in 9th grade and home schooled. I already joined several Yahoo Groups for home schoolers in that county and area. I posted and introduced our family. Told them a little about my son, his likes, interests etc. I asked questions about local things for home schooled teens. I heard back from several families with sons similar ages. I have learned there is a speech club, chess (library and families), YMCA PE, a Nerf weapon group, and that someone in the speech club is interested in one of my son's favorite things. I also searched their archived messages to see what sorts of things home schoolers had done in the past. Not as much as my current area, but it seems enough to keep him busy. He would be content meeting no one new. I am going to insist he join in something. He will be able to take classes at the local schools if he wants too, something we can't do now.

I was home schooled and loved it - I was in so many different activities, I really didn't ever have trouble meeting people and making friends. Some of my suggestions that either my friends or I did were: 1. Volunteer - animal shelter, senior home, environmental organization, hospital etc. 2. Work/intern at a place that would have like-minded people or people of your age in particular at 3. Join a sports team - you can do this either through the local high school or most areas of recreational leagues and club teams 4. Find common interest groups/event in your area - book club, foreign language group, art center, lessons of any kind, etc just Google and keep a look out for flyers in the library and such. 5. Commit yourself to a routine/hobby - if you're always doing homework at the same time at the same coffee shop or hanging out at a park or ice rink on the same days you are bound to run into the same people often enough you get to talking etc. Good luck!

I'm Home Schooled. I have many friends and I haven't been to school since 2nd grade. I get friends from going to church, community events, and going to homeschool activities (Yes there are some good ones that can be quiet fun), I'm also in USAF aux CAP for teens (a "military training" facility). You can also take school sports. So just get around you will find friends in places you wouldn't expect.

The best way to meet people is to join a homeschool support group. You can make new friends and go to all the activities. Here are two links where you can find one in your area. http://www.home-school.com/groups/ http://www.localhs.com/
