  • Im in a child development class at school and we are doing preschool and i have to do a lesson plan but i need ideas of actitves to do with playing involving counting can you please ...show more

  • Answer:

give each kid a bag of regular or mini M& Ms or Skittles, make them open the bags and count how many of each color they get and make a bar graph showing how many of each color each kid gets. When this is done let the kids eat them for "a treat" OR you can fill a small jar with candy ex: (jelly beans, gummy bears) and then put like 20-25 pieces of candy in it. Ask them to guess how many are in the jar. Then when everybody has guessed, count the pieces together as a class. Then give it to the winner

Ah! Fun! The nice thing is that you can incorporate counting with pretty much any sensory table. I like to provide containers with numerals on them and it encourages them to place that many items in each container. Listen and count. Provide shallow containers and encourage the children to work in pairs..one with their eyes closed and one "dropper". The dropper starts dropping the materials 1 at a time into the container and the other child is silently counting what they hear. This works best to be introduced as a small group first and then place the containers and material into the sensory table. Sorting and counting often go hand in hand. I've place different colors or different types of sensory materials into the table and containers to correspond for them to sort. Then we count how many of each type or how many of each color there are. Pom poms and corresponding colored containers is an easy one. Add tweezers and mini tongs to add in a bit more fine motor. I've also done counting bears and their colored cups mixed in colorful rice. I've also done colored water and eye droppers with containers of different sizes. I ask, how many eyedropperfuls water do you think it will take to fill this container? How about this one? I've also placed contact paper sticky side up and created a chart with foam numbers and yarn. I put colorful foam shapes inside of a sensory table (colored rice, sand, beans, etc). Children then place the foam shapes as they find them onto the chart. 1 at the 1st column, 2 at the 2nd column and etc. I've used formula scoops and cornmeal and we counted how many scoops that we put into containers. Use wide neck and narrow neck and having some funnels available teaches a bit of problem solving also. Hope you find something that works for you!
