    Usually you learn to operate any kind of locomotive/railcar (diesel or electric) at a train operating company, and then specialize on steam locomotives at a preserved line. But most steam trains operate rarely enough that they don't employ their staff full time. So you would work for a regular railway to earn your money and additionally volunteer run steam trains on weekends.

Steam locomotives are obsolete simply because (a) the engine requires a crew of two (b) the engine burns precious coal (3) the chimney belches out smoke polluting the countryside. Would people accept double fares simply for the privilege of having their train hauled by a steam locomotive? I don't think so
