Why are Irish rail fares so expensive?

When are the british government going to make the rail fares lower?

  • so that more people stop driving and take the train instead, people dont just want cheap advance fares they want cheap fares at all times so that rail travel is much more convenient.

  • Answer:

At present the government subsidises th=e rail fares, but they are gradually reducing those subsidies - which means that in effect they are putting the fares paid by the passenger UP. Rail companies are commercial and have to make a profit - and they are also putting fares UP at more than inflation. There is little chance of anyone doing anything to make rail fares go down in the immediate future.

the rail companies are privatized, the government doesn't set the fares, the train companies do, and they work on the basis of "what the market will bear" well, the rail companies won't put the rail fares down, they're hoping to make a bucket load out of the privatization of the motorways. Then they'll get your money both ways. They'll happily kill us all for a few% extra profit.

If you want First Class travel on a bullet train with internet service then you have to pay for it and train operators can be competitive with their prices.
