Good Medical Career with just a Bachelor's Degree?

For a career in flying does it matter what kind of bachelors I have or is it just that I have a 4yr degree?

  • Answer:

The Bachelor's degree is a screening device that can be turned ON or OFF depending on the market. Today, with thousands of highly qualified pilots looking for work (our recent classes have averaged over 7000 hours, most with jet transport airline time), and the assumption that an applicant with a BS or BA will be "smarter" than one without, it easily cuts the applicant resumes by a third or more. For the foreseeable future (UPS and American recently announced furloughs), the more "merit badges" you have on your resume the better, which would include a BA or BS. To improve your chances, it is better to have your degree in a technical field, and the closer to aviation the better.

No, it essentially does not matter. On airline applications, which are "scored" by computer, you receive points for various accomplishments. Let's say, for example that an AS degree is worth 3 points and BS degree is worth 10 points. You receive no extra points for where you go to school and what you major in. What you need are the required pilot ratings, flight time, 4 years of higher education and good references. An aviation degree will NOT help you get into the airlines. It won't hurt of course, and it gives you a little better background on the technical side of things, but it won't give you an edge over applicants who have a degree in something else. Take it from someone who has a more or less useless BS in Professional Aeronautics and wishes he had gotten a degree in a profession that could pay the bills during the times he was out of work as a pilot due to the economy, like right now. Talk about a BS degree...it's a b.s. degree. Besides that, the airlines actually look for interesting people with varied interests and backgrounds. Someone who is 100% aviation all the way is one dimensional and rather boring to fly with. p.s. In today's world 95% of all major airline pilots have at least a Bachelors degree. If you don't it will be hard to be competetive.

Narp. It won't look as good as the guy with the Aviation Science degree but it won't hurt your chances. My CFI used to work for a major airline, he had a four year degree in communications. Still got hired. Airlines don't necessarily even ASK that you have a degree, it just goes without saying because the best candidates applying have a degree of some sort. Most piloting jobs out there don't require a degree to get at all. Go for it anyway!
