Who is Carl Linnaeus?

What did Carl Linnaeus do and why is he important?

  • What did Carl Linnaeus do and why is he important? Thanks

  • Answer:

There were various ways of classifying plants and animals prior to Carl Linne (Linnaeus) but the names given to organisms were very cumbersome, with names often extending to five of six words. Linnaeus renamed all the organisms known to him, cutting them down to just two words i.e. a binomial system. It is not true that he was the first to advocate this. The idea had been proposed by Gaspard Bauhin (after whom the shrubby genus Bauhinia was named) but the idea was not really taken up until Linnaeus revived the scheme, which soon gained international acceptance.

he's known as the Father of taxonomy. He was the first to systematically classify organisms. His work provided fundamental insights to Darwin's theory of evolution, which stated organisms evolved from a common ancestor. In simple english, if you can group somethings into the same group, then probably they are decedents from the same ancestor.
