What is the difference between primary and secondary growth in plants?

Does talking to plants really make a difference in their growth?

  • Answer:

[1] As with the case of plant responses to different types of music being played, there's no definitive answer to whether plants grow faster because they're being talked to. [2] The idea appears to be that plants may grow faster if people talk to them at close range. The reason tends to be twofold. One is that people expel carbon dioxide when they talk. Plants take in CO2, and release oxygen, as part of photosynthesis. So more CO2 helps photosynthesis, which leads to more energy reserves for plant activities, and therefore improved plant health. The other is that people up close to their plants pay more attention to plant appearance and needs. So they're quick to spot, and control, stresses and stressors such as yo-yo watering or spider mites. [3] The questioner can always carry out his/her own experiment, and report back the results. Actually, for carbon dioxide to even begin to affect the plant, you would have to talk to it for at least seven hours a day. Most scientists believe the reason talking and music help plants is because of the vibrations caused by sound waves or the pitch at witch you speak. It is believed that plants like sound at around 70-92 decibles. Source:internet

Have you ever seen a show called Mythbusters? Well, they did a show about that, and apparently no, it makes no difference. They even put groups of identical plants in identical greenhouses, played soft soothing music to one group and loud heavy metal in the other group, no difference. Hardly what you'd call "real" scientific evidence (it is a tv show, after all) but pretty convincing. They had two more groups of plants, one with a tape recording of gentle talking to the plants, and the other with a tape recording of someone screaming insults at them, and after a few months, still no difference. They were careful to provide the same light and nutrients to all the groups. There was one more group where the plants got nothing at all, just the same amount of water and nutrients. No difference in them either. Of course, I knew the answer even before I watched the show. Of course it would make no difference.
