I've been freelancing for about 2 years now and let me tell you one thing you need...well two thing. A price list and a contract. Especially for weddings. Wedding industry is probably going to be the most lucritive and the most troublesome. I have had brides even after the consult change colors and look or even add an additional look later. Or add bridesmaids or mothers who also want their makeup done. You need a contract stating what you will and won't do. And stick to it. Make sure when the contract is signed (at least a month before) that at that time you do a consult and get half the amount to be paid that is NON REFUNDABLE. Which means even is there is no wedding or the bride changes her mind she does not get a refund at all. (I've had wedding cancelled so its important). If they don't sign the contract don't do anything. Even for friends I make them sign the contract because it states if they don't like it they basically can't sue you and etc. VERY IMPORTANT. Photoshoots for 2 looks (changing the look) that is a beauty shot I'll charge 65-75 Brides Minimum 75 Bridesmaids 180 with Minimum of 5 Consult is free but signing of the contract required at that time and 50% down. Prom 60 Halloween 70 This does not include traveling cost which I usually negoiate at 20-30 and add that to the totatl in the contract. Hope that helps...Good Luck!

There isn't a real set price for freelance makeup artists. First of all it depends on your location. Obviously, if you live in smaller town versus a big city you will have to adjust your rates accordingly. Know how much your clients can afford. Also, it depends on your reputation. Do you have a killer portfolio and amazing recommendations? If so, you have their trust, which clients will pay for over risking it with someone else. A lot of times I will fluctuate my rates according to the budget of my client. But, I always have a minimum that I won't go under. So, if I know that one person is more well off then I may raise my rates a bit and lower them for someone else, with out ever going under my minimum. At the end it all evens out. Besides for your set minimum I would charge separately for travel time. Charge by the hour, what you decide makes it worth it. Consider that your time is not only being spent in a car but as well gas and/or ticket. All this and more from the event makeup artist

I think that location is a major factor in pricing. I would recommend calling up the salons and freelancers in your area to get price quotes. That way, you can adjust your prices according to theirs. You should take pictures of the makeup looks that you do on yourself and others and use it to create a portfolio to show new clients. It will demonstrate your experience and even give clients ideas for looks they can choose from.
