strength of the developer. a 40 will basically rip and tear your hair to shreds, a 20 is generally what they use in salons to bleach, and a 30 is strong, but not deadly.

20 volume lifts slower, and its relativly safer for a hair bleach newbie, 30 lifts faster but still sloe enough that some with little expierience can use 40 volume shouldn't be used with bleach unless your a professional, it'll lift faster, but if you miscalculate by a minute, you wind up with breakage.
