Why is the sky green during a tornado?

Why is the sky green when a tornado is near?

  • I, am a giant weather fan but I always wanted to know why the sky turns green before/after a tornado shows up?

  • Answer:

A green sky's correlation with tornados and / or hail is a myth. Severe weather - Yes! Tornadoes and hail - No. Research published in the Journal of Applied Meteorology (Gallagher, 2000) points toward the air's water content where small water droplets absorb red and reflect blue. When blue is observed against a dark background such as a cumulonimbus cloud...it takes on a green-ish hue. Read all about it... http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/pdf/10.1175/1520-0450-39.10.1754

Thunderstorms, which can be the home of tornadoes, usually happen later in the day, when the sun is approaching the horizon. That creates a reddish tinge in the sky, as any fan of sunsets knows. But light under a 12-mile high thundercloud is primarily blue, due to scattering by water droplets within the cloud. When blue objects are illuminated with red light, they appear green. Hoped that helped and im also a huge weather fan :)
