What are some really good tips for a singing audition?

  • i have a big audition for a musical, and i have a pretty good voice, but what are really good tips that would let the judges know that im good? or just any tips about not freaking ...show more

  • Answer:

Prepare, prepare, prepare! you will feel much more confident if you know your song very well, that will allow you to still sing beautifully even if you are nervous. Also, durring the audition, think of the audition as a performance; change the bad, anxious kind of nerves into excited jumpy nerves! By convinving yourself that you are simply performing for the people at your audition, you will feel completely confident. For some people it helps to think of themselves as already having the part they want, and are simply singing for the director who cast them. Try not to look at whatthe director is writing down about you- look straight to the back, but look focused, not zonning out. The audition will fly by, youwill make mistakes, you will nail other parts of it. If there is an acompniast, they will follow you, be strong and confident, if you lead them, your audition will go wonderfully; the last thing you want to worry about is if the piano is playing the right thing! Whatever happens, keep going, auditions are too short to get caught up on mistakes you think you might have made. And always be curtious, even if the director gives you the evil eye, it is always better to leave with a smile than in tears!

I am singer as well and when I audition I usually pick a song that show my range (voice) but something simple. I come from a background of gospel music and when you have that background people tend to do all these vocal acrobatics with there voice and the judges can't heard anything. Don't give them too much Jessica Simpson with all the facial expression and hand movement. Stand flat foot and SING. Use your vocal range but give the judges the song with all feeling and power. Show the what you are working with. Pick a song that's right for your voice and KEEP IT SIMPLE!

Some standard audition advice: Traditional audition attire is either black dress pants or a knee-length black skirt and a solid red or black top with sleeves and without cleavage; the whole outfit should A) evoke the character you're going for, and B) be professional looking. What if I'm auditioning for a teenage rebel, you say? You can evoke that image without jeans and a tube top; never never never go to an audition "in costume". Make-up should be natural, and your hair can be down but should be out of your face. Do not wear a hat. Bring dance clothes for the dance audition. Wear character shoes if you have them, otherwise any closed-toe black shoes will do, but bring some shoes that are comfortable to dance in. If you get called back, wear what you wore for the first audition so it's easier for the director to remember you. That way when you walk on stage the director goes, "Oh yeah, her, I remember her. I liked her." and you're already off to a great start. Have your song and monologue memorized ASAP. Practice in front of your friends and ask for feedback. Once your song is memorized, rest your voice. Drink lots of water to keep you voice hydrated, and make sure you warm up and run through your song once about an hour or so before your audition. Show up to the audition site at least a half hour early. Be nice to everyone. You never know what the runners tell the directors in between auditionees! And stand up straight and SMILE! Break a leg!

Drink a lot of water the day of the audition and the day before it..... RElax, stand up straight so that you can make sure that there is a good breath behind each phrase that you are making. Make sure that your voice is going somewhere in the song [don't be static]. Show emotion, EXPRESS, don't just stand there and sing. You have to understand the song you're singing and put yourself in the situation of the character in the song. Hope that helped you a bit :]

pick a song that you know off the top of your head- that way if you get nervous you wont forget the words. also pick a song that shows your "comfortable" range! not anything 2 difficult. make sure to BREATHE...you will do just fine. also make sure you have a 2nd song ready incase they have call backs! BREAK A LEG

Pick a song that doesn't call for you to strain your voice, DO NOT pick anything from the show you are auditioning for, smile often, and make eye contact, and the more theatrical you are infront of them, the better. NO dairy products (produce phlegm) and I'd drink water the day of audtion. BREAK A LEG!
