Answer:
The History Boys is a great script to read! It has a bit of French in it - if you can't understand you can always look on the net - but it's a great story line and a fun read Here's a synopsis: The action of the play takes place in Cutlers' Grammar School, Sheffield, a fictional boys' grammar school in the north of England. Set in the early 1980s, the play follows a group of history pupils preparing for the Oxbridge entrance examinations under the guidance of three teachers (Hector, Irwin and Lintott) with contrasting styles. Hector, an eccentric teacher, delights in knowledge for its own sake, but the headmaster ambitiously wants the school to move up the academic league table; Irwin, a supply teacher, is hired to introduce a rather more cynical and ruthless style of teaching. Hector is discovered sexually fondling a boy and later Irwin's latent homosexual inclinations emerge. What else is there.. oh yes, the Crucible? By Arthur Miller - that's good stuff! the synopsis is huge for this one - so i suggest you look online for that :) love!

You say you have these classic plays, and have 'heard of' them - but have you actually read them? If not, do so - you are missing out on the best! But as for modern stuff - anything by Alan Ayckbourn, Giles Havergal, Jim Cartwright, Thornton WIlder, Caryl Churchill, J.B. Priestley. And don't forget older plays by Sheridan, Moliere, etc. Read a wide variety of plays - any era, any style. My daughter buys plays from charity shops (what do you call them in the USA - thrift shops?) whatever they have when she calls in, and reads them all. Some she likes, some she doesn't, but as you don't get to choose very often as a pro actor it's great practise! She imagines what she could do with each role, how she would play it, what accent, what attitude, etc. You can also find some more unusual monologues for auditions that way. Good luck!

Anything by Tom Stoppard. I personally love Arcadia. If you haven't read any of the American classics from the mid-twentieth century, now's the time to start - If you want to be well versed in theater of your own country, read a lot of Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, and Eugene O'Neill. For Miller I suggest: All My Sons The Price A View from the Bridge Death of a Salesman For Williams: The Glass Menagerie The Rose Tattoo Streetcar Named Desire For O'Neill: Moon for the Misbegotten The Iceman Cometh Long Day's Journey into Night And, while your at it, you might want to also read Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf by Edward Albee and House of Blue Leaves by John Guare.
