What are some good colleges for programming/software engineering?

Do you think private engineering colleges are degrading the value of engineering education in India?

  • With hundreds of private engineering colleges coming up every year it has become a very profitable business and these colleges are run like a business too. I've known cases where students who don't even qualify state level entrance exams are given admissions to fill seats in these institutions. The quality of education there can be anyone's guess. Indian city of Bhopal and Indore themselves has more than 100 engineering colleges each. Semester exams are a sham and the whole student community is dependent on coaching classes and refresher books. Do you think by giving an engineering degree to these undeserving candidates who don't even score minimum qualifying marks in entrance exam are bringing down the quality of overall engineering education of India. Later on, these people gets placed in mostly IT companies and does low value office tasks and creates a bad name globally for Indian engineering fraternity. I've had feedbacks from my counterpart based in off-shore offices that the quality of Indian engineers is not upto that mark what it used to be before. Shouldn't engineering seats be limited to a decent number so that devaluation of quality of engineering graduates can be stopped?

  • Answer:

I dont think there is any doubt about it today. I have heard that a lot of "engineers" from these colleges are trying to clear Bank Exams and gosh, they are finding that difficult too.

It is not a unique problem to Engineering colleges, it applies everywhere that there is an oversupply of colleges to cater to the Indian demand for Engineering/Medicine. See these Ayurvedic Medicine students protesting over getting a 5th chance to clear their exams: http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/bangalore/seeking-fifth-chance-to-pass-exam-two-bams-students-attempt-suicide/article5475150.ece Seriously? You couldn't clear your papers in FOUR attempts and want to try for a fifth time to become a DOCTOR? When people will be putting their lives in your hand. Who would want to be treated by these folks? Yet, many of them would receive a degree and open up shop somewhere. The problem is that in India, the middle layer of education, i.e. Undergraduation is the only layer that has been truly opened up, they get a huge influx of students from the schools, most of whom are victims of a flawed school system. Instead of fixing these students they just tune the Undergrad education to make-do with the poor input. The only way to fix this is to fix the Schools first. Liberalize the sector, let people open 100s of private schools instead of colleges, the good ones will survive, poor ones will fall behind on the wayside and close. Kejriwal is wrong in restricting private schools. He should instead open it up, like 1991 economic policies. Competition should fix the Donations/High fees problem, not legislation. What is the incentive for a school to be "better" if the fees is fixed and every school gets the same? Maybe the Govt could rate schools and fix a slab, with the upper slab having an open end. Although, he is right in opening better Govt. schools, but the Govt, is inherently in-efficient in running institutions.

Please describe the experiences you had as a student while studying engineering in the colleges of UP government. UPTU is a fuck in name of engineering. My experience in one of the state government college of Uttar Pradesh. No quality of education and less or no practicals you can say. One more thing this is not a lie . 1.Compiler Design: I proposed idea of Hindi C@undefinedompiler (So that I can write programs in my mothertongue)...faculty rejected the idea claiming that it is IMPOSSIBLE!! I submitted some LEX shit in project, and developed the compiler in parallel...and demonstarted to the same faculty.....result: I got C grade! 2. OS: I was thinking about writing a kernel inC#....as usual...faculty claimed it impossible...and tagged me as mentally retarded (yeah...I am serious)....I developed a kernel in C# with complete PS/2 Keyboard and mouse support, ATAPI drivers, VGA driver, GUI, and related stuff (drag..drop, left/middle/right click options, resizable window, overlapping window etc) and threw on the face of faculty....result: I FAILED in OS (I was laughing hard after seeing my marksheet) 3. Final Year Project: I proposed idea of guesture control....and whole department was laughing (yep...in my college...whole academic staff sits while accepting project proposals for final year prj.). As a proof of concept, I submitted a demo program which used facial motion and gestures to control the computer (using OpenCV, C++, and QT for GUI). After that, faculty cancelled the project....and I was "forced" to complete PhD project of my mentor (In case you are curios...it was his LAST year of PhD....and I screwed up whole project..preventing his PhD from IIT Kanpur
