Education: What are some careers that most college degrees outshine in terms of salary? Motivation to obtain college degree
-
Many people go on with life without college, landing jobs like restaurant manager. I don't judge anybody, I am wondering what are jobs that non-degree folks usually go for, what are their salaries? The reason I ask is bc I am seeking a degree, I want to know how much more I will make compared to if I don't go to school. I do have a hard time getting through classes, school is a challenge for me. I want the best for myself, so I seek facts to help motivate my efforts.

The classic answer is, plumber. http://www.amazon.com/Spend-Til-End-Raising-Standard/dp/B004J8HXLI/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1383352220&sr=1-1&keywords=spend+%27til+the+end by http://www.amazon.com/Laurence-J.-Kotlikoff/e/B001IGSMQY/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1383352220&sr=1-1 and http://www.amazon.com/Scott-Burns/e/B00FUUEGKK/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1383352220&sr=1-1 argues (in chapter 9, "My Son the Plumber") that plumbers may wind up with more money than doctors. They start earning money early, while future doctors are still in school. They don't spend the money on college and medical school. And they don't spend any more money setting up a business than the doctor spends starting a practice.

Salaries can vary considerably depending on where you live. They also have to be measured against the cost of living and other variables, such as taxes and health benefits. In Canada, for instance, a bachelor degree may easily raise your earnings from 30k$ to 45k$ a year. Your earnings may also vary within that range, depending on your field of study. Top earners will make around 100k$-250k$. They tend to be more educated, but the studies don't tell about the secret of their success... Strange fact, however: top earners who never finished high school where among the richest (400k$). The law of offer and demand may also play a role. In places where education is relatively affordable, a university degree may not stand out as much as deserving of privileges.
