  • Answer:

All wrong ... you can go directly to an FM2 with no FM3 .... and marrying a Mexican or having a kid in Mexico will not speed the process You do need to spend 5 years on an FM2 and there is a final payment when you reach inmigrado but it's not much I used a lawyer this last time just for an FM3 renewal because it saved me trips to Guadalajara. 800 pesos was worth it FM2 – I must have an FM3 for a number of years before I can apply for an FM2? False. You can apply for an FM2 right from an FMM.

You can become a naturalized citizen by three different routes: 1) having lived for five years in Mexico, 2) have a child who is born in Mexico 3) be married to a Mexican citizen. The price varies slightly according to the route one takes. The slowest route is to get the FM2 immigration document with which after five years you can be declared and immigrated person and begin the naturalization procedure. It is not necessary to have the FM3 visitor - non resident document for 4 years before being granted an FM2. The actual naturalization process takes from 6 mo. to 1 year and the cost, by any route, is less than the equivalent of $200 USD.

Laws change from time to time and may change again. Visa fees go up yearly. as Jim said you must renew an FM3 4 times...meaning having an fm3 for 5 years. I believe the new amount you must have monthly to qualify is $1500. then you must have an FM2 for 4 and 1/2 years. then you may apply to be a legal permanent resident..and after 2 years you may apply for citizenship...which usually takes about 2 years to process. FM3 currently costs 1, 294 pesos per year. FM2 is about double that. There is also a hefty fee for changing status. Not all fees are explained in the on-line or printed material...little surprises when you go into immigration! Another large fee to apply for permanent resident. I do not know the fee to apply for citizenship...but it would be 12 years in the future and fees will surely change over that time. You could consult an immigration lawyer, and there are some who speak English...but you have a long time to go before you are ready to apply for citizenship. The immigration website can be very confusing to read and when you go into your local immigration office you may get conflicting info. Unless you are married to a Mexican citizen, you must have an FM3 5 years before you can change to an FM2....no shortcuts. I just reviewed all this with my regional immigration office here in Veracruz a few weeks ago.
