Hiking Mount Marcy, NY?

  • I am thinking of hiking Mount Marcy in the ADK's this summer with my kids one 7 and one 11. has anyone else done this with children? I would like to know your success or failures ...show more

  • Answer:

Personally I think that you're allowing your inexperience and your ego to over-rule your reason and that you're jeopardizing the safety and well being of your kids in the process Regardless of who does it a 15 mile hike is a long day on trail .If the weather turns to crap at mile 10 and your seven year old's small uninsulated body starts suffering the negative effects of hypothermia are you equipped to carry him to safety ? Y'now a Camp Trails Freighter Frame +some climbing webbing >lash the kid in and start moving out ala Maurice Herzog on Annapurna Personally I would use Marcy Dam lean-to's for two nights and knock the round trip to Marcy summit down to a more do-able 10 miles or so

I have hiked up Mt Marcy in the past, but not with children. I can tell you that it's a long hike just to get to the base of the summit. If you start out at Adirondack Loj and take the Van Hoevenberg Trail, you'll need to hike over 7 miles one way. Once you get to the base of the summit, the climb is fairly easy. The toughest part will probably be the hike back to the Loj. Everytime I hiked in that area, the hike back to the car always seemed endless. Good Luck...and have fun!
