Are you familiar with the book "INTO THE WILD"....That kid Died trying to survive in the wilds of Alaska using a "BOOK" as a guide. You Cannot Eat A Book For Dinner!!! First and formost, In "Wild Country" you are part of the food chain. You must be prepared and able to defend yourself with "Deadly Force". Some hikers, campers and trekers believe "Bear Spray" is the answer ... I Most Certainly DO NOT. Although that spray can be quite effective as long as the animal you are using it on is "Down Wind" .. If not you will more than likely hit yourself in the process (not good). If you are Too Young or Inexperienced to carry an "Adequate" firearm...DO NOT GO INTO WILD COUNTRY. If you use one can of spray you will need a backup and a backup to your backup ... In other words, you will need to carry an extra bag just for cans of spray (not good ). Now there are a few other things to consider ... You will need the materials/ability to make fire in Wet or Dry conditions . You will need shelter from the elements-a tent or the ability to build something with materials on hand. You will need clean water or the means to purify any and All water sources. You will need food ... Your ancesters were hunter / gatherers ...You must do the same. DO NOT EAT ANY VEGETATION THE LOCAL ANIMALS ARE NOT EATING. You must be Observant /Cautious in the extreme. You must be Invisible ...short version ...Smell like your invirnment. Observe what the animals are eating....To do that you must get close...To do that you must be invisible. And ...If you pack it in .. pack it out ...When you leave a camp site the area should appear as if you were never there !!! All of your basic camping and survival need can be had at your local outdoor outfitter. Use the gray matter between your ears. I lived off the land for a year in the "Bridger Teton National Forest" in Wyoming and another 6 months in the desert in Arizona. NOT A SINGLE BOOK DID I READ FOR SURVIVAL...I USED MY BRAIN.
