How do you use a baitcasting reel?

I heard that if you use a spinning rod with a baitcasting reel the rod will brake. has it happened to you?

  • Answer:

It has never happened to me, but it's a definite possibility. Spinning rods have different "spline" (or spine) and guides than a baitcasting rod, and (honestly) really aren't designed to be bent "backward". Using a Spinning rod with a baitcaster would probably hinder your casting distance somewhat, (because the Spinning guides are floating above the rod blank 2-3"). You would DEFINITELY miss the "trigger" feature, which is mandatory on a baitcasting rod today. (The trigger actually helps you control the rod while fighting a fish and gives your hands more area to grasp!) The odds that the Spinning guides would begin to pop off (after a couple successful fishing days) would be VERY high. Not to mention how stupid you would look to other fishermen.......... Ask yourself- Would you use a putter to drive a golf ball? Would you try to play football with a volleyball? Would you go deer hunting with a 22?

not to me but i have heard many tales of this happening to others

There is no reason for the rod to break. It should actually work fairly well, I think, but it would be better to use the proper equipment. It is pretty hard to actually break a rod in any case. I have seen two break in 50 years of fishing.
