Do the Doug Hannon fishing snakes work well underwater?

Do Doug Hannon's fishing snake work?

  • i jsut bought this cool lure i saw on WFN called the fishing snake. do you know if it works? if so what is the best way to fish it and what equipment should i use when fishing it?

  • Answer:

In the right conditions, with the proper structure/weed-line, they "can" produce for Bass. Like GMB mentioned, the DH Snakes are simply a large floating worm. I got the snakes years ago when they were first introduced. They can work if your in an area/lake/spring where: #1. The water is stain-free and clear- They don't work in stained water, (at all). My best luck came from super-clear, Spring-type, waters. #2. They "can" work in States above the Mason/Dixon line (esp on Pike), but I had my best luck in South GA and Florida. Obviously, both of these States have an abundance of live snakes and waterdogs..... #3. I've had more strikes around matted vegetation and thick weeds than in open water conditions. Understand, they are NOT a "magic lure". The average fish I've caught with the DH Snake were no bigger than when I've been using a Spook Jr or a 10" worm. For best results, try fishing them early morning and late afternoon in the clearest water you can find. Hope this helps ya? Good luck!

Fisher_King had a thorough answer about where/how to fish the lure. As far as equipment goes, I'd opt for a 6'6", 7', or 7'6" Medium/Heavy or Heavy action casting rod, with a Baitcasting reel that will hold 100-yards or more of 17LB mono, and 17LB Berkley Big Game mono. A "Flippin' Stick" would be a good choice for that lure.

It's an empirical question, meaning...you have to try it to find out if it works. This isn't a theoretical endeavor. You already own it. I certainly wouldn't suggest you never try it.

That COMPLETELY depends on what you're trying to catch. Personally, I wouldn't buy it. Where's the challenge if it does work? Pick up a Catalpa worm in the Spring. Slit it open and turn in inside out. Bait your hook. Get the biggest bluegill or sunfish you've ever seen. On the other hand...for what are you fishing? The biggest bass I ever caught was on a blue Mepp's spinner bait...roughly 35 years ago. It was almost 15 pounds and it was snowing (Michigan).
