i was stalked by a mountain lion south of Butte, Montana in 2001. it was around September 1 and i was walking in the sagebrush around a huge swampy area when i saw what i thought was a calf elk out of the corner of my eye but it was walking forward towards a small timbered island so i immediately realized it was a mountain lion. i was walking down a wide game trail and the lion was trying to get to a large downed tree to set up an ambush. i had a canvas duster in my pack so i took it out and wrapped the coat around my arm to catch & throw the lion if he jumped on me. in 1994 i saw 2 mountain lions chasing bighorn sheep above Rock Creek and i ran up and threw rocks at them and they ran away- you are bigger than a mountain lion. do not run or play dead, pick up rocks and throw them at the lions.

Not with a Mountain Lion but a Bobcat tried to getting into a shooting blind with me one day. It was still dark and fortunately I had a flashlight with me. I turned it on in time to see the big Bobcat turn in mid air and flee. Whew! That was a close one! H

I've only seen two, and then from the highway. They move quickly and blend into their surroundings well.

I've heard that by the time you see 1 mountain lion, 50 have already seen you. Creepy, isn't it? I had someone hear one growl while hiking with me, and I'm pretty sure I've seen tracks, but I've never actually seen one myself. If you do see one, pick up small children and put them on your shoulders. Make yourself look as big as you can. Be loud and back away slowly, facing the animal. Don't turn away and don't run or you'll trigger its predator instincts. Message you want to send to the beast: you're big, loud, annoying, but don't want any trouble.

Haven't yet! But when I walked the "train trail" in Placerville, Calif. with SIGNS posted ... WARNING MT. LIONS.... I carrIed a WHISTLE and jangled my keys.....however I have since read about Mt. Lions attacks, that they could care LESS about your noisy efforts....so best advice....STAY OUT OF THOSE AREAS!!!!!!

I've never had that problem, but I figure if I can handle these da*n fire ants a mountain lion can't be all that difficult.
