Why do people say divas today are used a sex symbols/eye candy, when back then they were getting half naked?

    This is a very good question Waterpillar and I'm going to give you a good answer. Most of the best female wrestlers were from the 90's during the Pre-Attitude Era female wrestlers Alundra Blayze (Madusa), Bull Nakano, Luna Vachon (R.I.P.), Bertha Faye, Jacqueline and Sable. Now Sunny and Marlena were also part of the roster during that time however, they weren't active wrestlers they were both valets and managers for other wrestlers on the roster. That's when WWE did have some very good competition in the Women's division in the 90's Pre-Attitude Era and in the Attitude Era itself that's when the competition really started to pick up with all new faces in the Women's division Lita, Ivory, Molly Holly, Jazz, Trish Stratus and Victoria all arrived on the scene and of course we had 'The 9th Wonder of the World' Chyna who herself humiliated and defeated "Double J" Jeff Jarrett and sent Jarrett on his way to World Championship Wrestling she defeated him for Jeff's Intercontinental Championship at the WWF/E Unforgiven pay per view. Yes, the WWE did have a few bikini contest, pillow fight diva matches, bra and panties matches and other television segments that were for ADULTS to watch however, that material was inappropriate for CHILDREN to watch on television. Keep in mind that was a different time and place in World Wrestling Entertainment the Attitude Era and Post Attitude Era was PG-13 for the Wwe's television programs and 2008-present time we are in the PG Era of WWE television rating. Back then the Women's division was very competitive and there were some great matches on Raw, Smackdown and many pay per view cards. With adding Trish Stratus and Gail Kim to Wwe women's division they helped to revolutionized that and we had two of the best female wrestlers of Canada both competing on that roster. Matter of fact Gail Kim won the Women's Championship in her debut match up. There were females who were used for 'eye candy' that never competed in wrestling matches diva's like Torrie Wilson, Dawn Marie, Stacy Keibler and Debra (Stone Cold's Ex-wife). The rest of them really tried their best to perform good matches for the Wwe fans and I do appreciate the efforts those years provided us fans with some really good matches. Today this present time some of the Diva's on the WWE roster are great at what they do and they can perform some good matches in the ring. However, they are not being given the opportunity to "shine" and they are not being given the opportunity to wrestle to the best of their ability. Gail Kim, Beth Phoenix, Michelle McCool, Melina & Natalya all can wrestle and these are the best females on the females roster. The Bella Twins, Rosa Mendes and Alicia Fox can not wrestle that good and should be released. Layla Maryse, Kelly and Eve Torres are getting better they've shown some improvement and Kaitlyn well she won NXT Season 3 for nothing she has not been seen on Smackdown for several weeks so, both Kaitlyn and Tamina aren't being given the opportunity to be in matches. Now we are still in the WWE PG era and the WWE now supposedly isn't all about 'beauty looks' and 'eye candy' remember that WWE signed Awesome Kong and Cris Cyborg Santos is in talks with WWE about signing a developmental contract. To answer the question NO the active females in World Wrestling Entertainment aren't "eye candy" and they can't "strip tease" in front of the camera anymore because we're in the PG era of wrestling. This isn't exactly Shimmer where the females on the roster aren't "Divas" these women can actually wrestle and can take most of these divas on the roster to school when it comes to competing in a regular match they should really considering reaching out to Sara Del Rey from Ring of Honor and offer her a contract.

Cause back then women were eye candy AND could wrestle. While Jacqueline, Ivory, Victoria, Molly Holly, Chyna, and Lita were doing most of the wrestling, Trish, The Kat, Terri Runnels, Sable, Torrie Wilson, and Stacey Kiebler were bringing it with the their "other" goods. Plus, women were actually be use in relevant ways, and had actually storylines. You had Lita w/ Essa Rios, then the Hardyz, Chyna with DX then Eddie Guerrero, Molly Holly with Spike Dudley, then the Hollys, then the Hurricane, Ivory w/ Right To Censor, Debra with Jeff Jarrett, Tori with Kane then X-Pac, Luna w/ Gangrel, etc etc. You saw women at EVERY part of the card. Today, you have handful of women who can wrestle, then just the rest of the women, doing pretty insignificant things. Maryse added nothing to Ted Jr (mostly Ted's fault though), Tamina's with Santino, Gail Kim MAY be with Daniel Bryan (did they forget abut that storyline already?), and Michelle McCool being shoved down people's throats for like 5 years now. On top of that, most of the divas today really don't have personalities to even engage the crowd. Other than the Sharpshooter, tell me something relevant about Nattie......? Eve...? She can dance....and....that's it? Debra, Chyna, Lita, Sable, and Trish were their own empires, and the divas today are mostly...just non noteworthy. There's honestly not much to get excited for in regards to the divas when you truly compare them. **They COULD become them, but until the WWE/writers put that effort into them, it won't happen. Plus, you can't at all compare the past diva's statue to the ones now. Kelly Kelly has been in the WWE for 5 years, and has shown NOTHING. No ring skill, no charisma, no nothing. People say Cena only "knows" 5 moves, well Kelly Kelly literally can only do 3. McCool's a good wrestler, but as a character, she has forced charisma and forced mic skills, as if she's uncomfortable in the role she's in. It's no excuse to be like that when you've been employed since 04.

Why do you think the WNBA isn't popular at all, because the women aren't that attractive or they aren't being turned into sex symbols. This is the truth about female sports, and the same goes for the Divas. Most(not all) men didn't care about womens wrestling till sunny came in, and the Diva concept started floating around. Of a hot woman valet actually mixing up in the ring. Its just the IWC that complains about womens wrestling, which the IWC doesn't even come close to covering all of wrestling fans. The weird thing about the IWC is about half of the people who complain about womens wrestling are ones that really do want good wrestling from the women, and the other are smarks who all they do is complain and complain and complain about anything and everything, and say they want the attitude era back. That is where you get the hypocrisy from.

I don't know why but every single guy I talk to doesn't care about the divas and they just like them becasue of their looks. For example, many guys like Maryse just because she has naked pics. Divas are seen as a joke today!

Some of the Women back then were allowed to use wrestling holds and wrestling moves in matches. WWE today gives you 2 monute matches if you are lucky on television. Actually, the WWE Divas wrestle longer matches at WWE House Shows and you actually get to see them using wrestling holds and wrestling moves. Where is Chris Jericho? He finished up a Book Tour for his new Book: Undisputed last month. It's a great book, just as good as his first one. In the meantime, Chris Jericho is preparing for the upcoming season of Dancing With The Stars.

Well you have to realize that back then WWE (WWF) was not rated PG. It was for the more older people. They actually wrestled though. It's not like now when they are just there to be there. Divas of the 90s and 21st Century are basically the same wrestling wise.As for being eye candy,they still are.They may not be as revealing as they were in the 90s,but they are still there to be gawked at nonetheless.Only a handful can actually wrestle (about 5). Chris Jericho is dancing with the stars.
