What was your worst interview?

It's been 3 weeks since my interview, and no response. What is the appropriate action?

  • I interviewed with a company three weeks ago today. As someone with hiring and interviewing experience, I sincerely think the interview went well. I had to take an analytical assessment when I applied, which I passed, and had to retake the assessment during the interview, after which I was told that I performed better, and that was what they were looking for. I was told that the next interview would be with the VP, who was out of office until Tuesday. The interviewer told me that he would be relaying his feedback to her on Tuesday and I should hear back from them around then, should I be chosen for the second interview. Of course I can't say for sure, but the interview went well, and the recruiter showed a general interest in me, and I in the position. I sent a short thank you email on the day after my interview, reiterating my interest. I didn't expect a response to that, and I didn't receive one. The following Wednesday, a week after my interview, I sent another brief email checking in and asking if there have been any updates. Again, no reply. Lastly, on Monday, almost three weeks since the interview, I called the office, asked for the recruiter, and was directly forwarded to his voicemail. I left a respectful, brief message asking about the status of the position. I shouldn't be surprised, as I received similar treatment during the application. I was sent the assessment, completed it, and heard nothing from the company for about a month and a half, at which I was emailed asking to come in for an interview. I don't want to come off as nagging, although I do believe persistence is a positive trait, but I'd like to know what's going on with this position. What should I do next? Continue attempting to contact the recruiter, or should I escalate my efforts and email the VP who would be interviewing me next? Or, do I sit tight and wait for their response? Thank you!

    I'm currently an umemployed college grad and unfortunately because the economy is so tight right now, employers interview dozens or even hundreds of people for one position. I'd say out of the 30 interviews I've had during the past 8 months, only 50% let me know whether I got the job or not. The other 50% percent never contacted me again, despite asking them about the status of my interview. Seriously if a company isn't nice enough to let you know whether you got the job or not, they just aren't worth your time. I think it's just unprofessional, rude and says alot of negative things about the company.

It sounds like you've done everything right! As the user before me mentioned, some companies are just overwhelmed with the recruitment process and don't follow up with candidates. Have you checked to see if the job is still posted anywhere, or if someone has already filled the position? If it looks like the job is still open, there's no harm in continuing to reach out every once in a while, expressing your continued interest and fit for the position. Maybe alternate between phone and email, so the recruiter can respond back in their preferred method (some prefer to hide behind a computer). Mention that you'd just like to know, either way, where they're at in their decision. I'd also say it's ok to reach out to VP directly, if you can get through.

You can either phone the HR Department and ask for an update, explaining that it has been 3 weeks since your interview or you can send them an email asking for an update.Three weeks is an entirely reasonable timeframe to expect a response one way or another.
