It might be rock hard now but as soon as it rains the clay will be soggy soft and will collapse without warning. You must shore and line the tunnel as soft clay can creep through the smallest space and fill the tunnel with ooze. Don't kid yourself it will always stay dry unless you live in the Nevada desert or your tunnel is at least ten metres below ground. Many an over optimistic tunneller lies buried beneath apparently solid clay - it is very treacherous stuff.
