How can i get around paying extra charges when traveling by train through Italy with a Eurail pass?

  • I've read that when traveling through Italy you have to pay extra money to use trains even if you have a Eurail pass. Is there any way I can get around this? Haven't I already ...show more

  • Answer:

The Eurail pass is you train ticket, but it does not always secure you a seat. On some trains it's necessary to reserve a seat, and this is an additional cost, usually only a few euros. Seat reservations are necessary on fast trains or if travelling first class. Many 2nd class seats do not require a reservation and you just get on the train and select any seat. Check at the train station before travelling. If you want a sleeper or couchette on an overnight train, the extra cost is substantially larger. This situation is not unique to Italy, but in all European countries. There is no way around it if you want cheap, efficient, travel.
