Answer:
No man, the airports are far from the city, you'll need a cab or a bus to get to the center. And Rome is huge. Just look for the places you want to see on google maps, and you'll se how big is the city. All those zones of the city are safe even at night. The only danger in the historical center could be during football matches with foreign teams, and one could be mistaken for rival supporter. But this happens very rarely in Rome. As in all big cities you'll move using cab, bus, underground, Just beware of pickpockets, use common sense and no problems. In this site (with english version you can check the public transport and make your tour). It's the official site. http://www.atac.roma.it/ As you'll see on google maps, you'll arrive at Fiumicino or Ciampino airports, quite far from the center

Three days is plenty of time to see everything on your list. The Metro (subway) is the cheapest way to get around. Day 1: Vatican, St Peter's, Sistine Chapel. They are all in the same place. One tip: Buy your tickets for the Vatican Museum/Sistine Chapel ahead of time. The line can be very long. St. Peter's Basilica is free. Just be sure to check the closing time. The Vatican Museum is enormous. You can easily spend several hours there. Day 2: Colosseum, and throw in Palatine Hill and the Forum. They are all in the same area, and one ticket includes all three areas. Day 3: Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon. You might want to consider a hop-on/hop-off bus for one day. There may be a few other things you want to visit, so you can get off wherever you want. It's more expensive than the Metro, but you get to ride outside and you don't have to put up with the pickpockets. They also stop right at all of the tourist locations. Be very careful crossing the streets. Be careful even on the sidewalks. Traffic in Rome is like nothing you've ever seen. Go to youtube and search for "Rome Traffic." It's absolutely amazing.

No, gosh, walk from the airport, are you nuts .... the airport is about half an hour away from the city by small train. Take the small train into the city, to the Termini railway station, and from there you can use the metro to get around. You could walk, but that's very time-consuming. Things are a little spread out in Rome. And a word of advice - if you haven't booked your ticket for the Vatican/Sistine Chapel well in advance, you will be stuck in a queue that's a mile long. The reason I know it's a mile long is because it took me 20 minutes to reach the top of it at a fairly brisk walk (in heat. I wasn't killing myself, but I wasn't strolling either.) If you've only 3 days, don't bother with the Vatican generally. It's cold and creepy. Go everywhere else on your list, however, they are all interesting. I think you might find a good travel book to be useful.
