Answer:
Florence is a very nice place to stay and most people speak English. If you learn a little Italian ahead of time, that is a good thing. There are actually nice hotels near the train station and even though some people say don't stay near the train station, it is not a bad area. Everything in the city is walking distance. You can take a bus tour of Tuscany. Go to one of the castles and have some of their Super Tuscan Wines. They are delicious. You will have a wonderful time. Just check out deals on the web-site ahead for hotels.

You haven't said if you'd prefer a hotel or self-catering. If a hotel then Trip Advisor does indeed have plenty of good advice. If you'd prefer self-catering slightly outside the center then this apartment http://www.summersleases.com/florence-cottage-for-two.cfm is private with buses into the center

I am going to Tuscany for a week in June so have been researching A LOT on this myself! If you are wanting to stay somewhere central then Florence or Siena is probably your best bet. If you stay in Florence I would recommend a day in Siena and vice versa. I am staying in a lovely, little, authentic Tuscan town called Pienza which is in the lovely countryside of Val d'Orcia but has a handful of shops and restaurants too so it's not too quiet, it's also a highly recommended place to visit and apparently is a nice drive, you can also get there by rail. Montepulciano which is a famous wine making area is nearby to Pienza so you could do both in one day. Central Tuscany is also known for it's thermal baths and natural springs, from what I can gather the baths/springs are free and there are spas/wellness centres attached to them where you can pay for beauty treatments, massages etc. There's also Chianti the winemaking region which might be worth a try. The leaning tower of Pisa. There's plenty of cooking schoolsm vineyard tours, cycling and horse riding and also things like hot air ballooning - Slowtraveller, virtualtourist and Trip Advisor are all good websites to find out more. If you are driving make sure you read up on traffic restrictions, especially in cities, as there's certain roads you will get heavily fined for driving down if you are not a resident, One last thing to mention, although I can't definitely vouch for this, but when I was asking around for advice of where to stay/visit I was told not to really bother with the coastal areas (except perhaps San Gimigano), they're not as pretty as the countryside areas or have much to do as the cities. Also most of the beaches are private which you have to pay a substantial amount per day for and apparently the free beaches aren't very nice - although like I say I can't personally vouch for this. If you're looking to fit a little relaxing into your trip maybe just make sure your hotel has a pool!!
