How do you paint blood and rust?

» can i paint my fiberglass canoe with rust paint?

  • I know how to paint a car and I will only use my canoe in freshwater so my question is will rust paint like trimmed clad work for painting my boat

  • Answer:

Rust paint,as the name implies is made for ferrous metals, not fiberglass.Sure you can paint your boat with it,but don't expect it to perform as well as the proper paint. There are many good marine paints out there, but this process works well for me; scuff the fiberglass/gel-coat with 320 grit.Apply an epoxy primer.Use Imron as a top coat or PPG's concept paint. The Imron is a little more durable, the concept a little easier to spray.

I'm not sure what you are calling "Rush Paint". Long ago I learned that you need to "prime" Aluminum prior to coating In my world paint is a coating. Before you prime you need to clean the aluminum and do other preparation. The idea is that not properly done you will not get good adhesion. If you look at very old Jon boats, you will note most of the original paint is still protecting the metal. It didn't peal away. After priming, I would use either a urethane or epoxy paint. That isn't RustOleum.
