What are good second jobs for electrical engineers?

Given that most Engineers are unmployable/have to settle for underpaying jobs, what are some good alternate career paths to follow after highschool?

  • I base this question on the following post from ToI: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/careers/job-trends/What-is-keeping-Indias-engineers-unemployed/articleshow/20643448.cms?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=referral It is interesting that a vast number of students choose engineering with promises of job security, but if engineering isn't supposed to keep you secure, what are some alternate streams which can lead to good careers down the line?

  • Answer:

    1. If you are not good at math , science , problem solving etc. you should not choose engineering. But if you think you enjoy these topics are above average then Engineering is highly paying. Only those engineers are unemployed who have not put hard work during their education and relied entirely on luck. There is a HUGE SHORTAGE of quality engineers in ALL FIELDS of engineering. And it is expected to be like that for a long while from now. 2. But if you are not a math / problem solving geek there are many other jobs. Each such job require equal amount of dedication if not necessarily math skills i) Law , it make take a long while but once you establish yourself as a lawyer you have a life long safe job which doesn't require constantly upgrading your skills as much as an engineer. ii) Accountancy , Accounting is a boring methodical job but requires careful understanding of rules. The more experience you have the safer you will be. iii) Government jobs , Keep interest in politics etc. try to get into administrative services. Promotions are yearly, dearness allowance takes care of inflation. But bear in mind that government jobs are shrinking due to privatization. iv) Business / Sales and Marketing : Business is risky but if you invest time and get moderately successful by 30s, you will be very rich by 50s. Sales and Marketing will always be average paying. Will require travel etc. but there will be always that sales and marketing job as long as you keep healthy and know how to maintain contacts.
