It is really a career. . . and it is not a cheap, quick, or easy one to get in to. Also the Merchant Marines are much more "maritime" then they are "marines". They are civilian, not military. So if your intent is "to serve" your country as in the military, then you are - missing the boat - so to speak, as a merchant marine.
