What are the best strategies to pass the TOEFL test?

  • What I would like to know is if you guys suggest, apart from studying, of course, any other thing like reading a lot about a very specific subject – Science or American history, for instance.

  • Answer:

The thing about the TOEFL is that it doesn't require the taker to have any knowledge about any particular subject. Here are a few strategies which helped me when I took it. Prepare in advance. Most of the speaking questions are repeated. Eg: what is the most memorable event in your life? etc. So it is better to decide what you are going to talk about beforehand. It's ok to make up stories. Take Notes. Make use of the sheets to take notes. Many people don't do this Speak normally. For the speaking questions, speak how you speak normally. Don't get the nervousness get you. It's ok to pause for a few seconds if you run out of things to say. Get used to the American accent.  Most test takers are from foreign countries,so try to make watch a few English movies to get used to the accent. Good luck! Hope it was of some help!

Some more helpful ideas: Definitely practice note-taking. Take notes for all listening passages (in the listening section as well as integrated speaking and writing). Practice taking SHORT notes, too--you need to be fast! Don't stress over the "technical" articles. Many of the scientific or academic subjects are supposed to be unfamiliar to you. The SAT and GRE Verbal sections are the same way. Even native speakers are not expected to know this stuff. The test is designed to see if you can handle new and complicated information (as you will need to do in college). So, don't worry (and lose concentration) just because a subject seems "difficult" to you. Find a technique to quickly plan essay responses and use it. For some, that means graphic organizers (you can see many examples if you google); for others, mini-outlines are better. Whatever works for you is fine. You want to be able to plan your paragraphs and your points easily and quickly in the essays. Hope this helps! Michael

The best way to go about this is to understand what all they ask in a TOEFL exam, and what are you supposed to know. The structure of the exam, the expectations. Once you have that basic knowledge, you can actually do targeted practice instead of flaying all over the place. Give some sample papers, and then go on to try and improve in the areas where you scored less. You save time, energy, and score better.   I think this article can help you greatly in your search for TOEFL preparation. Read science blogs, it should help! Apart from this I would like to share my experience I studied for three days for TOEFL and scored a 114. I would rate myself equivalent to people who score a 100+. Some of the things which I did which helped me are: 1. Three days before exams I solved sample papers. 4 papers are free of charge on ets website(these are partial papers). 1 Mock test comes for free, when you register for the test. 2. I made it a point to do listening sections in these tests, and for the speaking sections, I timed myself and recorded my responses. After each response I reviewed it and realised that I couldn't cover all the points, which I would have liked to, in the allotted time limit. Note: I think answers are marked based on normal English usage, coverage of all important points etc. One thing that I did (I did it out of the blue on the test day) was make notes. I made notes for all the listening questions. It helped me everywhere. In speaking section it reduced the gap in thinking for points, as I had all the points written in front of me, I could refer to them, and I didn't miss any points, consequently. 3. For the reading section I had some idea about the kind of questions asked, it was like para 1, first two que, para 2 next 2 que and so on. One question was of summary, 1st sentence was mentioned and then from some 6 choices we had to choose 3 which would complete the summary. For reading section- I read 1 para, answered questions pertaining to it, read next para and then answered its questions (the questions covered all the paras in the passage), so in the end I had read the entire passage. Fro the summary question, I read the choices (some contained stuff not mentioned in passage or some factual error - these I dismissed) in some cases I was doubtful, so I scanned the passage very fast to find the most suitable answer (note- in this question the passage does not appear at the left side of the screen, but there is a button at the top of the screen which allows you to switch between passage and summary question). For all the three passages to answer this question I did need to scan the passage once more, but I have a good reading speed so I managed. 4. Another thing which happened, most probably by chance, was that I arrived at the test center 1.5 hours before the exam started, so they allowed me to take it before scheduled time. So I had finished speaking section before anyone else had started it!! I guess I got lucky in this regard. Hopefully some of this helps you!! All the best!!
