What to choose: business or electrical/computer engineering?

Is it possible for computer engineering graduates to make careers in internet-companies?

  • Definition: Internet-companies: Business to Consumer (B2C) organisations that provide services over the internet. Typical examples: Google, Facebook, Yahoo!, Amazon etc.   Details: I want to pursue an MS in Computer Engineering. My grad school lets me choose from a number of tracks within this degree, for example VLSI, control systems or software engineering. I intend choosing software engineering. I am of the opinion that most CE graduates pursuing this track go on to become firmware engineers and are likely to work close to the silicon layer, for example by employing libraries authored by the Khronos Group (OpenGL, OpenCL etc.) or working on embedded computer vision or building protocol stacks and the like.   I would like to know if Computer Engineering graduates have an opportunity of pursuing careers in internet-companies, that work on technologies well above the silicon layer. I ask this because the course structure of CS programs usually do not cover web-technologies. It would also be nice to know if companies like Google, Amazon or Facebook hire Computer Engineers.  I apologize for any blatant assumptions I have made in this question.

  • Answer:

If you are talking about a Computer engineer such as a software development engineer, yes, of course.  At most of the companies you name in your list, A CS or similar degree is almost a prerequisite.
