How do you get rid of friends list on Facebook chat?

What is the logic behind the friend-list in Facebook sidebar?

• Hello, The facebook sidebar has been a weird addition to facebook. I can perfectly see the logic behind the live-news feed, as it is sort of a twitteresque live-feed, and also gives you chances to connect to long-lost friends if you randomy chance upon an update by them. But what I do not get is the display of the friend-names in the chat sidebar. It makes absolutely no sense. Why does facebook show a perfectly random collection of names in the list, most of whom are not even online, and most of whom I have no recollection of even interacting with. This seems like too much randomness, even for facebook. Is there any logic in that? How does facebook pull off such a useless list?

  "We show you people based on mutual friends, work and education information, networks you’re part of, contacts you’ve imported and many other factors" facebook says. I would also day Matching fields (city, places, tags, comments, likes, friends). They could be using (although it would be blurry regarding privacy) browser history, searches, previous email addresses where invitations where sent to, etc.
