What is a substitute for shellac?

Is clear nail polish a good substitute for shellac?

    I don't think so, but what was your application. Shellac these days seems to be most often used for sealing surfaces for separation molds and finger nail polish might work on some products but would be more costly than shellac, which does not normally dry clear but rather yellowish.
