  • Answer:

There is not such thing as "white" light. All "white" lights have a color temperature which varies depending on the light. 5000k is considered daylight, but it is no more or less "white" and than incandescent bulb at 3500k. If you are shooting digitaly, then you can adjust your white balance in the camera to match the light source you are using. If you are shooting film, you can choose a film type that matches the temperature of the light source you are using. Also, if you really want a 5000k light source, you can buy your bulbs online. Most websites that specialize in light bulbs will list the color temperature for the each bulb. Edit: I just saw that fotoace suggested that you need a 500W light. I respectfully disagree. If you are doing product photography, you can use a long enough shutter speed that the brightness of the light source is irrelevant.

This is not really that difficult... Go to any large home store, like Home Depot or Lowe's. Find the light bulb section. In the light bulb section, find the daylight balanced florescent bulbs. They will be clearly marked, and will cost more than "regular" cold florescent bulbs. In a fixture, they look almost blue. The bulbs I have are marked with 5,500K color temp. There should be several levels available... for product photography, I would suggest moving towards the higher end. 40-50 watt bulbs, which will give you output something on the order of a 200-250 watt incandescent bulb. A couple of them, and you'll be good for while!
