Candid vs Street vs Urban vs Documentary vs Humanist photography?

  • I've been reading about the differences but I'm still very confused. Some say street photography is documentary in nature, while others say that documentary photography is ...show more

  • Answer:

Why do you feel the need to 'label' yourself..? I honestly don't see any difference in the categories that you mention...Documentary, street, urban, candid...they all involve photography that is 'spontaneous' catching a moment that hasn't been rehearsed...and I find them all 'subjective', surely it's a matter of interpretation or perception. I can't grasp your use of the word 'mundane'...I think it is sad that you capture something that lacks excitement or interest - if whatever you are documenting has caught your attention then by definition, surely it can't be 'mundane'..? A documentary photographer (journalist) could be sent overseas as a war correspondent, their next assignment might be covering something in an urban environment, the inner city and might be made more interesting using 'candid' images. I am more of a photography enthusiast...I enjoy experimenting with different subjects, styles, techniques and equipment...I don't feel the need to 'position' myself within my interest...surely that would only serve as a restriction..?

I just take photographs, moments in time, let others categorise them as they will, it's really unimportant. What is important is the fact that your mundane images of today become treasures memories a few decades down the line, my children are children no longer, my parents are no longer with us, even the City has changed out of all recognition, Life moves on. Just keep taking those mundane images, you'll be glad you did. Chris

It's possible to spend one's life worrying about definitions. I just call myself a documentary and street photographer coming from a humanistic tradition. It works for me. Humanism is about an attitude or approach not just whether there are humans in the photo. I also have a saying, a motto really: There are no ordinary (what you call mundane) moments! good luck and thank you
