  • Answer:

For an APS-C camera 10.2mp is acceptable for most hobbyist applications. I would probably go for the D5000 because of the few extra MPs, extra ISO sensitivity and the pivoting viewscreen. The pivoting viewscreen might be handy for photojournalism.

Other answers

The D3000 has a CCD sensor while the D5000 has a CMOS sensor, giving a more clear picture, the D5000 also has a fully articulated screen which is good for self portraits, and high/low angles, it's good if someone wants to see themselves before the picture is taken, it is also good for astrophotography, the D5000 also has HD video mode.

I have the D3000 and it's going great. But i would agree with the first two answers here, the D5000 is more handy specially for such a job you will be using it in. Go for the D5k Good luck!
