    I never use black--too harsh. I mix my own color..or use paynes gray with burnt sienna added. The funds in my wallet limit purchasing ability...I know what you mean.

I would start with Basic or Liquitex. Buy all the basic colors Warm Red, Crimson Red, Phatho Blue, Yellow Ochre, Verde Green, Blue-Green, Burnt Sienna, Black, White, and Purple. It has been a while since I have taken my Color Theory class but these were most of the colors he suggested I hope this helps. Happy painting.
