Is "released from customs" the last step in shipping?

My things that i got from china are stuck at the jfk airport customs how do i get my stuff released?

  Don't call the airport. You want to call the government agency responsible for Customs at JFK airport, which is on the web at http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/contacts/ports/ny/4701.xml , with your case number in hand. Most times if you are carrying items into the country, you fill out the customs declaration and pay any customs fees right when you come into the country. Nothing would be held. If there are questions, they ask you right then and there. Additionally, it seems highly unlikely you would have spent enough in China to go over your duty free limit. (Do you have supporting receipts to show the amounts you paid?) A more likely explanation might be if you were trying to bring in counterfeit or illegal material. Got any "name brand" or counterfeit items purchased on the black market? Red flags that will get your entire luggage searched are clothing with fake designer labels or brands, counterfeit DVD's and such. These can be confiscated and destroyed, and you can hope you don't get a hefty fine! However, to get your question answered, you are calling the wrong place. The airport itself has no connection with the Customs Office.
