Do I need International Driving Permit in France?

Can I exchange my driving permit (from California or Ecuador)with a French driving permit if I move to France?

My wife is french. We are moving to France. I know some countries ca exchange their driving permits with the French one without taking the test. Will the California permit or the ...show more

The California one will NOT be exchanged for a French one. You will have to take a written and a road test in France (very long and very expensive). If you do this, you will get a French drivers license but with only 6 points as opposed to twelve. It will take three years to get the 12 points you would normally get as an experienced driver. As for Ecuador, I don't know but you can find out on several sites on the internet.
