How do I find a German birth certificate, and death certificate?

How to find the birth month and day of an ancestor when only the year is on death certificate/headstone? .?

  • Italian great grandfather who was supposedly born in Sicily and died in the Bronx in 1921.

  • Answer:

You might try checking with the funeral director of the cemetery because they should have some sort of records of who is buried there or else you might try EllisIsland.org to see if they have any records of his arrival to the US. If you have access to HeritageQuest.com (many libraries who have online access using your library card have free genealogy sections on their websites that access the US Census and that of HeritageQuest), you could try to look his name up. Lastly, you could try a free site like Rootsweb.com that has access to the Social Security Death Index <it is possible that he became a US citizen and registered for Social Security benefits> or even LDS.org.

Try immigration records, ship passenger record, marriage record, church membership records. Did he become a naturalized citizen? Find that court record.
